Kabuto buying guide

Most collectors of original Japanese samurai armor focus their purchases on kabuto (samurai helmet) and menpo (samurai mask). These two pieces were manufactured by the most famous Japanese armorers, as they were the most difficult parts of the samurai armor to construct. Furthermore, they look great on their own, whereas other portions, such as kote or suneate, are more difficult to appreciate. As a result, the price of a kabuto or a menpo can be expensive, and the price of a full samurai armor may be only slightly higher than the prices of these two elements separately! 

You Should consider many factors while purchasing a kabuto. The most significant factor is the level of craftsmanship. Many collectors begin by purchasing kawari kabuto (“extraordinary helmets”) since they have a powerful impact and are highly pleasant, while typical kabuto such as ko-boshi kabuto, akoda-nari kabuto, and suji-bachi kabuto may appear all too similar to enjoy. However, as your understanding grows, you may begin to realize the effort in making such kabuto, as well as the incredibly high skill of these Japanese armorers in working iron. 

The price range in which you wish to invest is, of course, critical. My first piece of advise is to strive to obtain the best value for your money. If you have a limited budget look for something simple but pleasant and in good condition. 

Another piece of advise is to trust someone, if you are not knowledgeable enough. He could be a dealer, a buddy collector, or a museum curator. You don't want to buy something you'll be sorry for: modern imitations, bogus signatures, adjustments that make a kabuto look better, and so on. Please keep in mind that auctions can be quite tough to manage because they frequently have to put what the seller wants them to write on the catalog. You have been warned!
