NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu to Hayashi

The polished and lustrous iron, with rounded edges crafted in openwork, is characteristic of Shigemitsu's work, the second master of the Hayashi School of Higo.

The Hayashi School is regarded as the most representative among the Higo metalworking schools. It was founded by Matashichi, who accompanied Kato Kiyomasa to Higo and later served the Hosokawa family. The second generation of the Hayashi lineage, Shigemitsu—also known as Tohei—was Matashichi's son. Born in 1667, he succeeded his father at the age of 54, continuing to serve the Hosokawa family. His artistic style, described in the Higo Kinko Roku in 1699, is noted for being “generally consistent with that of the first generation, but with greater refinement and elegance.” His body of work includes pieces that adhere closely to the founder’s style, as well as innovative creations marked by sophistication and elegance.
