Ivory netsuke modelled as a crane

Early 19th century

Height: 5.4 cm

The bird elegantly sweeps its long neck around to meet its leg, forming a flattened circular-shaped netsuke. The himotoshi on the body has been plugged, while the second one is hidden under the crane’s body.

A similar netsuke from the Bushell Collection, probably by the same carver, is published in “Netsuke Familiar and Unfamiliar”, pag. 229, as of “unusual shape”
