Mitate netsuke, 18th century
Length: 6 cm
Oni are demons represented with short horns and big mouths with fangs, do not wear anything except a thong in tiger fur. They are considered extremely powerful beings and very dangerous for humans.
The position of this oni suggests that this is a mock copy (mitate netsuke) of the “doctor's lady”: Chinese erotic ivory statuettes depicting naked women dating from the 17th century. The Oni of this netsuke gently crosses one foot over the other such as Chinese lady shyly crosses her bound feet.
