Takada Tokiyuki was active in Bungo Province (Kyushu) during the Ōan Period (1368-1378). The Takada school was founded by Tokiyuki's father Tomoyuki in Takada village, Ohita Prefecture, and remained active until the Edo Period. The swords produced by this school always had an excellent reputation for reliability. In fact, the island of Kyushu was very active in the sword trade, as it was very strategic for the purpose of commerce with other Asian countries and thus the scene of numerous battles to gain control over it. In addition, Mount Sobo Katamuki, near Takada village, was rich in high-quality tamahagane, and the resulting steel reached high degrees of purity.

Tomoyuki traveled to Bizen to learn the techniques of the local masters and, as we can infer from the characteristics of this blade, he also drew inspiration from it aesthetically.

Blades produced prior to the Muromachi period, such as these, are classified as Ko-Takada.

The sword, massive and elegant at the same time, fully reflects the rich and vibrant style of the period, with a clearly visible hada across the blade and a bustling hamon full of activity. The boshi on the long kissaki, in particular, reveals beautiful interactions between the temper line and the steel skin.
