Tsubaki Chinzan (1801-1854)

Shikishi with animals and plants

Ink and pigments on silk

8.5 x 21

Born into a family in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, Tsubaki Chinzan (1801-1854) was instructed as a member of the court: as well as martial arts, he also learned painting poetry and music. As a painter, he studied first under Kaneko Kinryou, than under the Nanga school’s masters as Tani Bunchô and Watanabe Kazan of which he became the best pupil. Even if the Japanese Nanga school was generally based on Chinese Qing, dynasty’s models of birds and flowers (1644-1911), Chinzan was influenced by more naturalistic techniques used in China in the late Ming period (1368-1644). The successful combination of these two styles brought Chinzan to produce works of great efficacy, imbued with a realism based on drawings from life, but which are however intended to capture the poetic spirit of the subject.
