Hanbo, samurai chin guard

This iron hanbō, lacquered in black urushi, derives from a model attributed to Nobuie and published in the Meikō Zukan, an 18th-century manuscript illustrating some of the finest examples of Japanese armor. Characterized by serrated edges reminiscent of a seashell and decorated with circular repoussé motifs across the surface, this design enjoyed popularity throughout the Edo period, although relatively few extant examples are known.
