A pair of large gilt yamagane menuki finely formed as tigers in bamboo with many piercings, the gilding slightly worn as is usual with Ezo fittings, in their fitted box.
The production of menuki called Ezo dates back to the Nanbokucho period, although the aesthetic roots of these works are to be found in the metal applications found on armor from the Haian period. Made by a group of artisans, probably active in the Kyoto or Nara areas Ezo menuki are made of different metal alloys, always finished with a surface gilding. Over time, the natural wear and tear of the gilding gave these artifacts the unique and fascinating appearance that makes them so recognizable and prized by collectors today.
