Katchushi tsuba with snowflakes

Katchushi tsuba with snowflakes

Edo period (1615 – 1867)

Maru-gata: 8,3 x 8 cm
Thickness: 5 mm

Early representations of snowflakes such as snow circle, were rather fanciful,  as in this case, since their true structure could not be seen. When the Edo period feudal lord Doi Toshikatsu published drawings of snowflakes he had observed under a microscope, he caused quite a stir among the artists of his days who fought to see the pictures.
The katchushi tsuba are typical of Muromachi period  (1392-1568). This one, a late exemplar, is inspired by the earlier ones.
