Hoate, samurai chin protection in yasurime

This refined iron hoate (half-mask) features a surface entirely finished in yasurime—a file-mark pattern. The chin is embellished with a family crest (kamon) depicting a motif of arrows (yumiya), adding a symbolic and decorative touch.

The otayori (side flanges) stand out for their finely crafted floral bases, showcasing exceptional workmanship. Particularly rare in hoate, the ears are skillfully integrated: the seamless external join allows for a slight projection at the lower edge, overlapping with the main body and imparting a sense of three-dimensionality and dynamism to the mask’s silhouette.

Also noteworthy is the double row of holes, another uncommon and highly refined feature that speaks to the sophistication of this piece.
