Tsuba e kodogu
La tsuba è una protezione, di solito rotonda, all'estremità dell'impugnatura della spada giapponese, che contribuisce all'equilibrio della katana e alla protezione della mano. Contrariamente a quanto comunemente si crede, la tsuba è stata pensata soprattutto per evitare che la mano scivolasse sulla lama durante le spinte e non per proteggere la mano dalla lama dell'avversario.
Le tsuba possono avere linee estremamente eleganti e sono di solito finemente decorate, e oggi sono oggetti da collezione. Le tsuba venivano realizzate da dinastie intere di artigiani il cui unico lavoro era quello di produrre questo tipo di opere.
